Understanding Factors Affecting and Contributing to DMA Leakage
Developing a DMA Assessment and Prioritisation Tool for the UK Water Industry
CLIENT: UKWIR
DELIVERY PARTNERS: Artesia Consulting & Dayworth Consulting
THE CHALLENGE
Water companies manage thousands of DMAs, each with unique characteristics, performance challenges and investment requirements. Identifying the most effective leakage interventions can be complex, particularly when attempting to compare opportunities across multiple DMAs or benchmark performance against peers.
The industry required a more consistent, data-driven approach to assessing DMA performance and prioritising intervention strategies.
Our Solution
Dayworth developed the project's core DMA assessment tool, enabling water companies to assess individual DMAs and categorise them into groups with similar underlying characteristics and performance drivers.
The tool provides a consistent, data-driven approach to:
- Assessing DMA performance
- Identifying common causes of underperformance
- Grouping DMAs into intervention scenarios
- Prioritising leakage reduction activities
- Comparing DMAs across and between organisations
As part of the methodology, Dayworth also developed the ALC Intervention Priority Matrix to support decision-making and visualisation of opportunities.
Dayworth developed an industry-leading DMA assessment tool that groups network areas into intervention scenarios, helping water companies prioritise investment and accelerate leakage reduction through data-driven decision-making.
The Outcome
The primary output of the project was the development of an innovative decision-support tool that assesses individual DMAs and groups them according to shared performance characteristics and underlying drivers.
Rather than treating every DMA in isolation, the tool identifies patterns across networks, enabling water companies to understand which areas face similar challenges and are most likely to benefit from similar interventions.
The tool allows users to:
- Assess DMA performance consistently using a structured framework.
- Categorise DMAs into scenario-based groups with similar underlying factors.
- Identify the most appropriate leakage interventions for each scenario.
- Compare performance and intervention opportunities across their own network.
- Benchmark DMA performance against other water companies.
- Support evidence-based investment planning and leakage strategy development.
The ALC Intervention Priority Matrix was developed as a supporting framework within the wider methodology, helping users visualise and prioritise opportunities identified through the tool.
